An essential element of any makeup look is the foundation. A good foundation will even out your skin tone and serve as a great base for the rest of your makeup. In terms of choosing the best foundation for oily skin, most people choose a color that matches their skin tone rather than focusing on its quality. There is no doubt that’s important but it’s not the only thing that’s crucial. When choosing the right foundation for oily skin, it is especially important to consider your skin type, especially if you do not have dry skin. Are you looking for the best foundation for oily skin?

Best foundation for oily skin

There are some foundations specifically designed for oily skin that contain pigments and other ingredients that can help absorb oil without clogging pores and leaving your face looking oily and shiny. If you choose a foundation that is right for you, then there is very little to nothing that can ruin your makeup if you choose the right foundation. If you use the right formula, you will be able to achieve a smooth appearance, cover blemishes, and scars, and achieve an even skin tone.

Regardless of the type of skin you have, the best foundation for oily skin should look naturally flattering on the skin – this means that it blends naturally into your skin tone, letting your natural beauty truly shine through while covering any unwanted flaws. It is therefore important to choose a foundation formula that offers you the right coverage and finish, and that also comes in a range of shades so that you can find the perfect color match for your skin tone.

What should you look for when buying oily skin foundation?

For the best foundation for oily skin, you’ll want to look for products that offer long-lasting, smudge-resistant, and/or transfer-proof formulas, as well as a sufficient amount of coverage to camouflage any blemishes or acne you might have.

Choosing a foundation that is suitable for oily skin can be a challenging task. In terms of what we would like, the ideal formula would wear well, is non-pore-clogging, mattifying, and has a matte finish (but not too matte so that the face looks dry and chalky), but with so much to choose from, it can be hard to determine which one will fulfill all our needs. Let’s be honest, if we’re being honest, we’re sick of experimenting – and we deserve to find our ride-or-die foundation as soon as possible.

Light foundations will give you an ashy look, while dark foundations will give you a cakey look. Despite this, people with oily skin have more significant problems to deal with than people with normal skin. It is a challenge to find a good foundation that is suitable for oily skin. The process of finding one that works takes time, patience, and a lot of effort.

In other words, if your base makeup is wearing off or creasing by afternoon, then your foundation is emulsifying with your skin’s natural oil causing it to look sticky and cakey. Here are some tips on picking the best foundation and how to apply it that you can get from our experts.

Types of oily skin foundation

There are the following types of oily skin foundation:

liquid foundation:

According to the latest research, the liquid foundation now comes with hydrating ingredients that ensure your skin stays smooth and radiant throughout the entire day.

Powder foundations:

As powder foundations are talc-based and quickly absorb oil from the skin, powder foundations are recommended for oily skin because they easily absorb the oil from your skin. It is important to note that this type of foundation changes color after it comes into contact with skin oil, so you may have to touch it up after a few hours.

Serum foundations:

There is quite a new player in the foundation race that is known as serum foundations. Among people who suffer from oily skin and those who have combination skin, it has become increasingly popular. I like these because they are thin, light, and easy to apply. To get the best foundation for oily skin, you should use a serum instead of a foundation cream.

How to Use Foundation on Oily Skin?

  • Make sure you clean your face with an oil-free cleanser
  • Take care of your skin by moisturizing it
  • Make sure that you apply a thin layer of foundation.
  • Spread it evenly across your face and neck so that it covers the entire area evenly.
  • It is recommended that you leave it for a minute and then apply other makeup.

10 best foundations for oily skin

The best oily skin foundation formulas that tick all of these boxes have been tested by our team of beauty experts to help them choose the very best products. As we went about our search for the best way to address different concerns, we found all the following items to be worthy of a spot on our list. Here are our recommendations:

1. Estee Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Makeup | 24-Hour Wear, Flawless, Natural, Matte Foundation

This Estee Lauder double-wear stay-in-place foundation provides medium to full coverage with a satin finish that will last up to 24 hours. However, the benefits do not end there. You can feel confident that you will look fresh, natural, and youthful despite all the heat, humidity, and nonstop activity that you do.

Estee Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Makeup

As a lightweight and comfortable product, it has been clinically proven to last for up to 15 hours without smudging or transferring to clothing. The flawless look that greets you in the morning is the look you keep throughout the day and well into the night. During my testing, what I was able to find out is that this liquid foundation feels indeed lightweight as claimed, but when it comes to comfort, there are a few things I need to consider.

There is a liquidy texture to this product, it is quite runny, and it has to be applied quite quickly for it to set up quickly on the skin! Moreover, the SA advised me to moisturize my skin before applying this product even though I have oily skin since it makes it go on smoother and it will blend in perfectly. I agree with that advice and I am glad I did! To replenish my skin, I use a dab of the delicious Estee lauder day wear cucumber cream, applied with my fingertips, just a small section of my face at a time, and apply this to a small area of my face at a time. As well to using a brush, I have also used hairspray and the results are the same.

.Estee Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Makeup

There were no imperfections, no spots, my dark circles were almost unnoticeable and my acne scars were gone! There is no need to use concealer. As you can see, it doesn’t go exactly matte, but I guess that could also be because I have pretty oily skin and it’s goddamn humid and blazing out here right now. While it is semi-matte, it looks and feels velvety and beautifully luminous due to its demi-matte finish.

Pros
  • Medium to full coverage
  • Lightweight and comfortable product
  • Looks fresh and natural
  • Long wear
  • Oil-free and oil-controlling
Cons
  • None

2. Make Up For Ever Matte Velvet Skin Full Coverage Foundation

Make Up For Ever set a lofty goal in developing this foundation: to create a foundation that would be undetectable and the best one there has ever been. I found that it wasn’t enough to just have buildable coverage, a wide range of shade options, and 24-hour wear – though these were all important characteristics as well.

However, the brand recognized that there are already plenty of foundations on the market that are already fulfilling these requirements. How does the HD Skin Foundation differ from other foundations that are available on the market today? As the name suggests, it is specifically designed to not look like makeup at all.

According to the brand, this foundation is designed to blur and cover imperfections all day long, using a micro-skin system that syncs with the skin for a true-to-skin finish while blurring and covering imperfections. Also, it is waterproof and sweat-proof, which is especially important as we are heading into spring and summer.

Make Up For Ever

The formula is extremely lightweight, so you never feel as though you’re wearing a lot of makeup on your face at one time. Furthermore, the formula blends out very nicely with a brush so you won’t have to worry about it being stiff or drying after blending. I think that is because of the glycerol and exopolysaccharide contained in it, which help to keep your complexion moisturized and radiant for a longer period.

Oftentimes, when I first use this foundation, I am left with the impression that it is thick, cakey, and that it is sitting on top of my skin. The foundation sinks into the skin and creates a flawless, even canvas after just a few minutes, but the effects are immediately noticeable as the foundation completely transforms the skin.

As a tip, if you’re applying this foundation to very oily skin, there are some extra steps you’ll need to take as well. The first is to use a mattifying primer (Makeup Forever makes a great one) and use blotting sheets before and between layers or touch-ups. To make this foundation last all day long, you might also want to set it with a powder.

Whenever I have used the Ultra HD foundation with a good primer, I have found that it lasts for the entire day. There have only been minimal issues with touch-ups when I have used this on photo sets. Under the eyes, the nose, and the chin are usually the areas that I tend to pay extra attention to.

Make Up For Ever Matte Velvet Skin Full Coverage Foundation

A lot of movement occurs in these areas during the day, so they are prone to creasing, smudging, and general fading over time. It would be best if these areas were powdered and blotted throughout the day with a blotting sheet or a sheet of single-ply toilet paper before you go to bed.

Pros
  • Buildable coverage
  • Wide range of shade options
  • 24-hour wear
  • Waterproof
  • Lightweight
Cons
  • Little difficulty in blending

3. Maybelline Fit Me Matte + Poreless Liquid Foundation-best foundation for oily skin

Maybelline is one of my favorite brands when it comes to makeup. There is a good quality to their products for their reasonable price range, which is why I like their products. In the past couple of months, I have been using the Maybelline Fit Me Matte and Poreless Liquid Foundation for quite some time, and today, I would like to share my thoughts on it and how it performed on my skin.

Whether it is for a casual outing or a day at the office, this foundation is my go-to foundation. It is very easy to apply the foundation because it applies smoothly without leaving the skin looking cakey. Furthermore, I have found that this product controls my oil around my T-zone for quite a long period.

It does not require reapplying the foundation just in case it gets too oily at some point in the day. If I just apply some compact powder can to achieve the same result. For my skin type, I find that one layer of the foundation is enough to give light to medium coverage to my face.
The natural finish of this foundation is pleasing to me, and it is very effective in minimizing the appearance of pores when it comes to minimizing the appearance of pores.

Maybelline Fit Me Matte + Poreless Liquid Foundation

There is a creamy texture and a slightly runny consistency to this foundation. Using a blending brush, I have been able to blend it magically. This can also be blended with your fingertips, it will blend smoothly and evenly if you use your fingertips.

It is a lightweight foundation that provides a natural look. I don’t feel like my skin feels heavy at all after using this product. It leaves a matte finish that is perfect for oily skin to keep the sheen under control and to keep the shine at bay. There is a great deal of versatility with this foundation, as it provides a medium to full coverage that can be built up without looking cakey. I also like the fact that it does not crease around the smile lines of the lips. I find that it does quite a remarkable job of evening out the skin tone.

In my opinion, this is the best foundation for oily skin that is prone to acne. Moreover, it is excellent at covering all blemishes, acne scars, and large pores on the face. It is also non-comedogenic, which means that it will not clog pores as a result of its non-comedogenic nature. Breakouts can occur as a result of products that clog pores. There is always a need to consider buying foundations that are non-comedogenic when you have acne-prone skin.

Pros
  • Easy to apply
  • Lightweight foundation
  • Medium to full coverage
  • Best foundation for oily skin
  • Non-comedogenic
Cons
  • Slightly runny consistency

4. New L’Oreal Infallible 24H Matte Cover Foundation

For those of you who like medium to full coverage of their faces, this foundation may be the right choice for you. It is a matte, not luscious, liquid-like texture, easy to blend, and can be formulated for people who want to hide blemishes or acne marks. As a result of the various marks on the skin, it is completely closed, never thick, and not heavy on the surface. Anyone who wants to get a little skin job can use a sponge to spread the foundation on the skin. To blend your foundation, you can also use a brush if you want a full-coverage look, or if you want a softer look, you can use a sponge.

I personally suffer from very oily skin and my face is covered with acne and freckles all over it because I have very oily skin. As a result, I love this one, the L’Oreal infallible 24h matte cover, because of how well it conceals, how well it performs, and how it can be used both every day as well as for an event. The second thing I like about it is that it covers so well that, if you want to cover it up again, you don’t need to use a call Zilker anymore to help you do it.

New L'Oreal Infallible 24H Matte Cover Foundation

When I was applying this foundation to my face, I had to blend it in very quickly as it was drying so quickly as soon as I applied it. As a result, it covered all my imperfections on my face and gave me full coverage at the same time. As soon as it is applied, it leaves a completely matte finish on the skin. I found that it stayed on my face for about 12 hours without looking cakey or greasy. I like the fact that it doesn’t oxidize on my skin, which is something that I appreciate.

In my opinion, the first thing I noticed was that once the foundation has been applied to the skin, it has almost a powdery feel, so the preparation of the skin is important – I tend to have a combination of oily skin, so I do have a few dry areas which turn into oily patches as the day progresses.

L'Oreal Infallible 24H Matte Cover Foundation

I found that using a moisturizer before I applied my primer and applying the foundation with a BeautyBlender gave the best results for me when it came to achieving a beautiful, even, full coverage on my skin. As I normally powder both the under-eye area and my entire face after using my concealer, I decided to leave it out today as my skin felt perfect matte and comfortable after using my concealer.

Pros
  • Medium to full coverage
  • Easy to blend
  • Hide blemishes or acne marks
  • Doesn’t oxidize
  • Best foundation for oily skin
Cons
  • None

5. GIORGIO ARMANI Luminous Silk Foundation

Luminous Silk Foundation, which is a high-end foundation known to be one of Giorgio Armani’s best-selling products in the industry, has consistently made its way to the annual “best of beauty” list year after year. It is a favorite with beauty editors, makeup artists, celebrities, and beauty-obsessed women, and is the best foundation for oily skin that has been on my wishlist for years now, as it is recommended by makeup artists.

To cover my hyperpigmentation and dark spots, I usually prefer medium to full coverage, which is why Luminous Silk is perfect for me. For medium coverage, I use 1-2 pumps of product and let it sit for a few minutes. If I still feel that I need to go heavier, I can add a few pumps to build up the coverage, and it somehow doesn’t get cakey / lose its luminosity even though I apply several pumps. In my opinion, that is very, very rare.

Luminous Silk Foundation

As soon as I applied the foundation for the first time, I was amazed by how smoothly and quickly it applied. I have never applied to any other foundation so fast. I noticed that it disappeared into my skin without a lot of manipulation even after I had applied many skincare products (multiple serums, a moisturizer, and a sunscreen), which is unusual for me to do.

 GIORGIO ARMANI Luminous Silk Foundation

It is a little sheer, but you can easily build it up to achieve medium coverage with this formula. I love the way this foundation looks even at medium coverage – it is so natural and almost looks like my skin! There may be some disappointment for those looking for full coverage, as it takes a few layers of the foundation to build up to a medium level of coverage. In my opinion, you would not be able to achieve the same level of radiant skin-like appearance with a thicker, full-coverage product.

Pros
  • Medium to full coverage
  • Best foundation for oily skin
  • Doesn’t get cakey
  • Long-lasting
Cons
  • For dry skin, it may not work

6. FENTY BEAUTY Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Longwear Foundation

The Fenty Beauty Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Foundation is a brand new addition to the Fenty foundation family that comes in a soft matte finish. It is a buildable, long-wear, lightweight, crease-resistant formulation that offers a light to full coverage, and is lightweight and crease-resistant. There is a fast, soft matte base that can be used by anyone.

Preparing the skin for makeup application should be done with a primer that you are familiar with, so you will know if it is the foundation that isn’t working, not the primer, that is the problem. Furthermore, I would advise you to not stray too far from the normal skincare routine that you are accustomed to in order not to adversely affect the first impression/wear of the foundation if you do. To minimize pores and reduce shine, I turned to my old trusty Maybelline Baby Skin primer with its time-tested formula.

The first time I tried this out, I used a brush to apply the product, I’m not sure exactly which brush it was, but I’m pretty sure it was one from Real Techniques. If you have a drier complexion, this foundation would probably not work well for you since it is a matte foundation. Fenty also offers a version that is hydrating if that is the case. In my opinion, the foundation blended out nicely, and it can be built up to full coverage without looking cakey when applied.

I like to apply this product using a damp sponge and bounce it gently onto my skin on days when my skin is a bit drier. It is a method that gives a more sheer look but can easily be built up to achieve a more sophisticated look. After applying my foundation, I proceed to conceal it under my eyes with my concealer, I do not feel the need to conceal it anywhere else with this foundation unless there is a giant spot anywhere!

FENTY BEAUTY Pro Filt'r Soft Matte Longwear Foundation

I Usually, use a loose setting powder under my eyes, and I allow it to sit for a couple of minutes before I apply makeup on top of it. To cover the rest of my face, especially the T-zone area, I use the Rimmel stay matte Pressed Powder in the shade Light. I have been using this powder for a very long time and it has never let me down.

Pros
  • Buildable
  • Long-wear
  • Lightweight
  • Light to full coverage
  • Best foundation for oily skin
Cons
  • Not found yet

7. Huda Beauty Faux Filter Foundation

I am an oily skin lady so I am always on the lookout for the next best foundation to keep my skin matte all day long while still keeping my skin lively throughout the day. Because of the huge number of products out there and the fact that there are always new releases of tint products coming out, it can be challenging to pick the right foundation for you. There are likely other ladies, like myself, who like to switch up their products now and then, just for the sake of variety. It is my pleasure to share with you my review of Huda Beauty’s Fauxfilter luminous matte foundation today.

There is no doubt that the foundation is a full-coverage product and it conceals almost every blemish. For such a high coverage foundation with such a natural finish, it is quite impressive. My opinion is that this finish is very pretty with a very luminescent appearance. My skin is oily and I have noticed that the matte foundation of this product keeps the oil away for at least 6 hours.

Huda Beauty Faux Filter Foundation

In my opinion, Huda Beauty’s faux filter foundation goes on seamlessly with a kabuki brush, and its concealer goes on very nicely on top of it. There were a couple of concealers that I tried, the Tarte Shape tape & Maybelline age rewind concealers, both of which looked flawless. I am indeed a huge fan of Huda Beauty’s foundation, but it cannot hold a candle to my holy grail, the Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation. There is no doubt that the Huda beauty faux filter foundation is going to be the holy grail foundation for girls with oily skin, but not as oily as mine, or even girls with combination skin.

. Huda Beauty Faux Filter Foundation

The application of my foundation is best done with a beauty blender, yet there is no reason why you cannot use a brush as well. A little goes a long way, a little goes a long way in terms of coverage, you only need a small amount to cover the whole face. The finish of the product is stunning once it has been applied – my face appears to be flawless as a result. I love the way it gives your skin an Instagram-like glow and doesn’t oxidize.

Pros
  • Full coverage
  • Doesn’t oxidize.
  • Create a natural and perfect look
  • Anti-aging formula
  • Best foundation for oily skin
Cons
  • A little goes a long way in blending

8. IT Cosmetics Your Skin But Better Foundation + Skincare

During the test period, our team put IT Cosmetics Your Skin But Better Foundation + Skincare to the test for a few weeks. The texture is very thin and is not particularly runny when it is first pumped out, but as you blend it, it breaks down in a matter of seconds into a thin, weightless liquid that instantly sinks into the skin and controls oil. Since the texture is so thin, I used an Artis brush to maximize coverage.

To give my foundation a seamless finish, I usually use a damp Beauty Blender to smooth it over while using a brush to apply my foundation. In my case, I used a brush to apply the foundation, but you would not necessarily need to do that in your case. With just a brush and a little bit of effort, it managed to blend in nicely.

My skin tone was evened out with just one layer of concealer and most of the redness around my nose had been covered. While a second layer was able to significantly reduce the look of the blemish, it was not able to completely conceal it. Furthermore, the formula also contains aloe vera, which is proven to have a calming effect on redness and irritation, as well as vitamins B5 and E, which are important to preventing harmful free radicals from entering the skin.

In conclusion, we were delighted with the finish because it is rare for a foundation to be able to provide a glow without being tackier at the same time. In most cases, glowy foundations are dewy enough to require a setting with powder to prevent them from interfering with the finish. This is a case where you can just wear it as is. You will get a natural glow, but the foundation will have completely set by the time you wear it.

IT Cosmetics Your Skin But Better Foundation

The shades are labeled with both the depth and undertone of the tone, so Light Warm, Light Neutral, etc, which is something I appreciate about them. In my opinion, it is a lot easier for me to choose the right shade of color when there is a description of the color provided.

Pros
  • Lightweight foundation
  • Medium buildable coverage
  • Enhances natural radiant glow
  • Improves complexion over time
  • Delivers all-day hydration
  • Suitable for all skin types
  • Available in 40 shades
  • Best foundation for oily skin
Cons
  • Prepare a brush for use.

9. Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua Ultra-Light Skin Perfecting Makeup

As with all Chanel Foundations, Vita Lumiere Aqua is one of the most surprising of all because it is soft, light, and aqueous in texture, giving you the smoothest and most natural-looking makeup results with a natural glow. It offers a sensorial experience unmatched by any other makeup finish: freedom for all women in search of a foundation that is delicate on their skin and reveals their natural beauty while respecting their skin.

According to the brand, the foundation is called Vitalumiere Moisture-Rich Radiance Sunscreen Fluid Makeup, and the brand describes it as a medium-coverage formula that instantly revitalizes and moisturizes the complexion for the appearance of a perfectly smooth, radiant complexion. According to the product, it claims to target dry skin, dull skin, and uneven skin, and create a soft focus effect on the skin.

It is a pretty thin foundation, but it does not runny on the skin, and it has a pretty natural feel to it. With the pump, you can easily control the flow of the foundation, and as you start to blend it out, you can sense the hydration in the product, which aids in the smooth melting into the skin as you blend the foundation. There is no doubt that this is a moisturizing formula, but it is not a greasy feeling and it does not seem to have that slip to it that you get from a lot of silicone-containing products that are on the market today.

Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua Ultra-Light Skin Perfecting Makeup

A semi-matte finish is achieved with the CHANELPerfection Lumiere Foundation after it dries, making it look incredibly natural-looking with a luminous glow. In just a few minutes, this creamy foundation transforms into a powder-like finish that does not require the use of setting powder once it has dried.

I like the way this foundation looks on my skin when I apply it because it looks so natural. In terms of coverage, this foundation provides a light to medium coverage, but if you desire you can build it a bit more. It should be noted that this foundation will not be able to cover up your acne marks on the skin, and therefore you will need to apply a separate concealer underneath if you have acne marks on the skin. I would describe it as more of a matte finish foundation. As a result of applying this foundation to my face, my skin appears matte and natural at first, but after 2-3 hours, my face becomes oily and shiny.

Pros
  • Choices of shades are good
  • Lightweight.
  • Blends easily
  • Semi-matte finish
  • Light to medium coverage
  • Best foundation for oily skin
Cons
  • Low coverage.
  • Poor staying power.
  • Doesn’t hide acne marks and blemishes

10. Cover Girl Clean Classic Tan Matte 560 Oil Control Liquid Makeup

This foundation was specifically designed for people with oily skin, or in situations and weather conditions that may leave them looking shinier than they would like. Because it is oil-free, unscented, and won’t clog the pores of your skin, it is great for sensitive skin as it won’t irritate it.

Despite the thin formula that contains water and silicone, it glides on smoothly, and it doesn’t feel greasy at all because it is oil-free. However, we can’t help but wish that the container was designed differently; for example, a pump bottle or a squeezable tube might make for less of a mess. However, the cheap price might also be due to the no-fuss packaging.

My first impression of this foundation is its consistency, which is one of the things I like about the formula. As for its consistency, it has a good amount of substance to it, it isn’t runny at all, and it blends out easily with a sponge. In terms of the finish, the foundation has a soft matte finish which makes your skin look healthy without being dewy, but it doesn’t look dull or dry, so it certainly qualifies as a plus for those who want to maintain a healthy-looking complexion without looking oily.

CoverGirl Clean Classic Tan Matte 560 Oil Control Liquid Makeup

There were over 100 degrees outside the other day, and I was sweating in my apartment because my oven was on. So when I checked the mirror to see the damage, I was surprised to see that only a tiny bit of shine was visible around my nose, even though it was over 100 degrees outside.

After applying two layers of foundation, I followed them up with some bronzer, blush, eyebrow gel, and mascara to complete the rest of my makeup. The only place I felt that I needed to apply concealer was under my eyes, where I usually have slightly blue dark circles underneath my eyes where I usually feel the need to conceal. In terms of covering breakouts or dark spots, the Covergirl Clean Fresh Skin Milk Foundation will not be able to do that, but if you want to look like you are not wearing any foundation at all, you should try this foundation.

Pros
  • Oil-free
  • Blends out easily
  • Covering breakouts or dark spots
  • Doesn’t look dull or dry
  • Best foundation for oily skin
Cons
  • Poor packaging

Final Thoughts

These are the best foundations for oily skin. Good foundation makeup for hyperpigmentation is a matter of personal taste, but some foundations give you more coverage than others.
